Orders to Eastern Europe, USA, Canada and the rest of the world should be should be placed by Friday, 2nd December.
Orders to Western Europe should be placed by Monday, 5th December.
Orders to the UK should be placed by Friday, 9th December.

Holy Make Overs, Batman!

Lately I have become attached to just about anything that involves masks, especially if they are of the Batman-like variety. Case in point being these silver mask earrings by Mooen on Etsy (which we recently discovered via Facebook). This is probably because they remind me of the very first collection from LBG, and also for sentimental reasons because we will soon be letting that go.

The plan for the Autumn/Winter 2011 collection is to rip it up and start again, to a certain extent, especially now we've got a better feel for where this label should be heading. Amongst other changes, that will also mean waving goodbye to some of those quirky and cool signature images from our original photoshoot.

I'm not gonna lie, I feel like Love Baby Grand has settled into a comfort zone lately and that kind of thing can easily turn into a bit of a rut. Sometimes you get so caught up in the day to day running of your business that all the interesting ideas you wanted to try in the future end up staying on the back burner. It's really important to keep things fresh, so that will have to become much more of a priority over here at HQ.

I'm a little bit too excited about the next season of Love Baby Grand, and I hope you will be too!

New Year Revolutions

Resolutions are made to be broken, so we never bother making any. This year, we're instead going for a quiet revolution at LBG, and seeing how that goes over the next twelve months. The most concise way to put it is that things are going to get a lot more interesting around here.

The main catalyst for this is that we realised that just because we know what we're up to all the time and how busy we are, it doesn't occur to us often enough that you [the regular blog visitors] don't know. So expect to see more updates on all the interesting projects we have on the go, more press, blog and Facebook updates.

The other important thing we had always planned to do but never quite got on top of, was working on featuring much more original content on this blog. So instead of regurgitating content from other blogs we love, *cough* Fashion Gone Rogue *cough* we'll be posting more sneaky peeks and images of works in progress before they hit the store.

And for our customers, packaging can never be too nice, can it? We're currently looking into prettying up our presentation so that your Love Baby Grand shopping experience is fabulous from beginning to end.

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

In the world of fashion retail and press, the 'Christmas season' started well before July, but with London looking like a snow globe all of a sudden, it's only just begun to actually feel like Christmas now. And around here, the arrival of December 1st is our signal to start getting into the holiday spirit, decorations, ridiculously rich foods, gift-giving and all!

This is the time to shamelessly mention that you still have time to place an order with us if you need your items to arrive by Christmas. If you are stuck for gift ideas and you're thinking of something in the lingerie family, then look no further than our ever-popular ruffle knickers.

Since the very early days of Love Baby Grand, these have been the knickers that have graced more treasuries and shopping carts than any of our other designs, whether we made them in cotton or in silk. They have been especially popular with our female shoppers. Perhaps it's because of the array of prints and colours they are available in, our possibly because ladies appreciate something that's comfy, gives decent butt coverage, but is still cute and sexy.

Perhaps surprisingly to most people, out of all the LBG knickers, this style is probably the most labour-intensive. Unlike just about every other label that makes this type of ruffle knicker, we make ours by finishing the edges with a pin thin hems that are steam pressed, very finely folded, steam pressed again, then folded a second time before they're finally stitched, giving them that very tidy finish.

And the sides of these knickers are finished with French seams, which is a technique you might find in vintage garments, but is rarely used in mass-produced clothing as it's quite fussy. That's a slightly technical way of saying that, whereas the more serged edges you find on most commonly available underwear are likely to start to fray very quickly with a few wears, ours have a neater, more couture finish that actually lasts for as long as you take proper care of your LBG knickers.

It may seem like a strange thing to do, going into all the technicalities of making underwear etc, but for people who aren't experienced in making clothing or working with textiles in any way, it might be interesting to know why it's worth paying a little bit extra for something lovingly made, than you would for something similar at say, Gap or H&M. It's all about the time taken in making each garment, hand-picked materials and fabulous finish, which you will never get from cheap, mass-produced items.

Whatever you really want this Christmas and holiday season, there's probably an artisan (maybe quite local to you) who can make it for you. If attention to detail is something that matters to you, and you like your stuff made with a little bit of extra fuss, then buy handmade!

High waisted knickers really don't get as much love as they should do sometimes. I guess many people think of old fashioned, three-in-pack Marks & Spencer granny pant(ie)s when you mention big knickers. Well, not all high waisted underwear is bad news.

We're hoping to prove that next season, with waist bands rising just a little in some of our newer knicker styles. Think 1950s retro glamour, rather than baggy cotton passion-killers! Below is a little hint of where we're going with this- cute and understated, but still sexy and chic. (I'm not sure where this image was from, but I believe the photo is by Jonathan Miller.)

Christmas Shopping Deadlines

It's that time of year again people, so if you're planning on placing an order with us there are a few deadlines you should bear in mind when you do.

If you are ordering from outside of the UK, it would be a good idea to make any purchase of made-to-order pieces by the 3rd of December to ensure they are made and shipped in time to arrive by Christmas. For shoppers within the UK, you can leave it til the 14th of December.

For all ready-to-ship items, your order should arrive in time for Christmas if it's placed by 20th December for UK delivery, 10th of December for delivery to the USA, Canada and Europe, and 6th December for everywhere else.

These dates all apply to our standard shipping tariffs, but other arrangements can be made. Depending on our workload, and the complexity of your order, you could still order a little later than these deadlines and still get your goods by Christmas, so it's worth enquiring if you're unsure.

New In For Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, the latest pieces from Love Baby Grand have landed in both our online boutique and the Etsy store just in time. We've updated the collection to include all new designs, as well as bringing back some old favourites from our Spring/Summer collection.

One of our favourite new designs is the Puppy Love bandeau bra and knickers set (below), made of super soft, high thread count cotton covered in a repeat print of different doggy silhouettes. The bra top ties up with a massive bow that's just too cute to keep under wraps. Speaking of super cute, we also have a new bikini-style bra design, this time with a ribbon tie-front soft cup, and covered in the most gorgeous purple, blue and lilac Liberty print. The matching Flirt knickers aren't too bad looking either.

As promised, our best-selling Peachy Keen knickers (you know, the silk satin ones with the ruched bum) are now available in new colours: black and pale gold, as well as lilac satin. We've also added a sheer silk version of them, which is of course available in classic black.

Amongst the changes you'll see in the Love Baby Grand collection over the coming season, you will notice more silk, more luxurious fabric choices and more adventurous designs. We hope you're looking forward to this evolution as much as we are!

The Super Star issue- with Emma Watson looking extra gorgeous and elfin on the cover- features Mario Testino's portraits of fifteen of the biggest models on the planet, including Naomi, Daria, Karlie, Lara, Freja and Natalia. Recently we have been experimenting with a new policy in our Etsy store, which we have decided to keep for the foreseeable future. We're now only leaving feedback for customers who leave feedback for us, meaning that customers can keep their purchases private if they want to.
When shopping for knickers and things (either for themselves or for gifts), we appreciate that not everyone wants to put their business out there. By the way, we're still always happy to hear from people who stop to say their thank yous by convo and email- we're cool with doing things that way too!

Having been a Madonna loyalist since the she first appeared in the 1980s, I should probably declare an interest, and a long-standing girl crush before I go any further. I love just about everything Madonna Ciccone does, even when she occasionally gets it wrong. Luckily, that's not too often.

Case in point: this short film of behind the scenes footage from her cover shoot for Interview Magazine, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Though she's the queen of pulling off the underwear-as-outerwear look, and has been since before it was fashionable, I was a bit worried about how she'd look in this video.

I needn't have fretted. When you get a team of perfectionists working together- Madonna, Mert & Marcus, and filming by Fabien Baron- it's hard to go wrong.

You've got Edita Vilkeviciute and those ridiculous cheekbones looking like a 1960s ice queen, Nathaniel Goldberg's amazing photography, Ludivine Poiblanc's perfect styling and an assortment of farm animals skipping through a country manor. That subscription to Vogue Japan is looking more appealing with every image.

Long Live McQueen

I'm not sure when this trend started, but it seems to have become the fashion that whenever a celebrity dies, the race begins amongst certain journalists and bloggers to be the first to bring them down a peg or two. Toby Young's article for the Telegraph must hold some kind of record in this department, having surely been written within hours of hearing the sad news.

From my understanding, the basic gist of the piece is that there is an element of 'emperors new clothes' about the way Alexander McQueen was worshipped by the powers that be in the fashion industry, and that this had more to do with his personality than his work, or his creativity. While there are many, many in the fashion industry who are overrated, McQueen was one of the designers who deserved the praise heaped on him, and could still have done with more. Even if you took away the drama and the theatre of his spectacular catwalk shows, and looked at the clothes in isolation, and you compare him with many of his contemporaries, his work was head and shoulders above the rest.

So stuff Toby Young (author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People), I'm going to toe the party line and agree that without doubt, McQueen was a creative genius. There are bound to be some amazing retrospectives of his work in the future but, in terms of video, this is all I've found so far aren't complete without mentioning his final and most awe inspiring Ready To Wear show.

Love Baby Grand Spring/Summer 2010 Collection

After much stress and effort in the last few months, we are proud to present our small but perfectly formed first collection. It's been hard work, but has also truly been a labour of love and has definitely turned out to be worth the effort.

With all of this new activity going on, there are also changes afoot in our Etsy store. The most significant one is that custom orders will no longer be available, what with the amount of work we have on at the moment. We've also streamlined the Etsy store somewhat, but we may add pieces from the Spring/Summer collection later on in the season.

We're still working on a way to display the lookbook in its entirety, but below are some of the key pieces from the collection. We hope you like them! If you have any comments or feedback you'd like to contribute, you can contact us at the online shop and we'll reply as soon as possible.

It probably feels like you've got ages yet, but Valentine's Day is coming sooner than you think. If you'd like to buy a little something from Love Baby Grand for someone special, it's a good idea to take note of a few deadlines when placing an order from our store.

If you would like any made-to-order items, to be on the safe side, you should make sure you place your order by Saturday, January 23rd to ensure they are made and shipped in time to arrive by Valentine's Day.

For all ready-to-ship items, your order should arrive in time for Valentine's if it's placed by February 8th for UK delivery, and February 5th for delivery outside of the UK.

The Berber and Michiel Colouring Dress

This is one I should file under 'I wish I'd thought of that'. What could be more fun than a dress that you can colour in yourself? It's a great combination of grown up glamour and child-like fun.

The unique dress, by designer Berber Soepboer, and graphic designer Michiel Schuurman, comes with a selection of felt tip pens, so that it's owner can fill in their own design to suit their own accessories, complexion or to match the occasion. I must be quite boring, because I quite like it in its untouched form.

The dresses have been made in a limited run of 50, in four different sizes (small to extra large). For around 250 Euros, the dress comes with its own customizable gift box plus a set of colouring pens. More details about it are available here.

Sonia Rykiel for H&M Debuts

Christmas Shopping Deadlines

With Christmas Day less than a month away, it's worth bearing in mind a few deadlines if you are thinking of placing an order from Love Baby Grand.

Although we will endeavour to complete orders as fast as possible during this period, it would be a good idea to make any purchase of made-to-order pieces by 4th December to ensure they are made and shipped in time to arrive by Christmas. Depending on our workload, and the complexity of your order, you could still order a little later than this and still get your goods by Christmas, so it's worth enquiring if you're unsure.

For all ready-to-ship items, your order should arrive in time for Christmas if it's placed by 17th December for UK delivery, and 9th December for delivery to Europe and elsewhere. Leave it any later than that, and you're probably at the mercy of Royal Mail!

Don't care what anyone says, for me Alexander Mcqueen's was by some distance, the best show and collection of all the S/S 2010 fashion weeks put together. The best thing about it was the shoes, the prints, the styling, the hair, the makeup, the clothes, the models, the production, the staging... in short, everything (minus the knackered live stream). It's hard to pick highlights, so maybe it's better to get into the details. How no one ended up taking a tumble is a mystery to me. [Images via style.com]

Super Nature at McQueen Spring/Summer 2010

Before going back to minding my own business, I just had to take a little time out to swoon over the McQueen show and collection. The only way I can describe it is extraordinary. I watched the live stream, and really it would take to too long to count the ways I loved what I saw (no one has the time to hear that!), but I think a true testament to how beautiful the collection was, is that even if you took away the glamour and the glory of the show and actually stripped it down to just the clothes, what you have in front of you would still be awe inspiring. Here's a video to very elegantly make my point for me:

Tough Girl Chic at Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer 2010

Perhaps inspired by the Dior Autumn couture collection, the trend for designers to send out looks featuring expensive underthings shows no sign of letting up for next season. Jean Paul Gaultier's take on it however, has been somewhat tougher than we've seen from his fellow designers. With the styling and aesthetic heavily influenced by girl gangs and the military, his underwear-as-outerwear pieces were more GI Jane than classic vamp. Rihanna, Dita Von Teese and Katy Perry, all big fans of wearing their underwear in public -in the line of duty, of course- graced the front row, maybe hoping that JPG can present them with something like Madonna's spectacular pointy-boobed corset, which has become iconic in it's own right.

Killer Looks at Dior Spring/Summer 2010

For the Dior ready-to-wear show, John Galliano succumbed to the vampish femme fatale charms of Lauren Bacall's noir heroine as inspiration for his Spring/Summer collection. Contuining the much admired underwear-as-outerwear theme he made so famous in Dior's Autumn Couture show, Galliano sent a series of lingerie-inspired looks down the theatrically staged runway. In a further ode to the famous showbiz and silver screen couple, he even borrowed Humphrey Bogart's classic belted mac as further inspiration for the noir look.
